I'm working on the artwork for her upcoming album, so for the inside, in keeping with the style of her music and our mutual love of vintage animation, we decided to create a vintage black and white cartoonland set.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To give it an authentic 1920s animation feel, I wanted everything to be stark black and white, no grey tones. While I do realize that there were some grey tones in animation in the 1920s, it was used very very sparingly. More detailed and fully rendered backgrounds didn't really start appearing in animation until the 1930s. Also, I wanted everything to be 2D and have a forced perspective feel to it. Here's some detail shots of the set pieces and props. </div>

Additional inspiration for the design of the set came from one of Janet's and my favorite cartoon characters, Felix the Cat. I borrowed heavily from Ottos Messmer's work as well as Walt Disney/Ub Iwerks "Alice" cartoons on this project</div>

I really enjoyed painting these characters. It's always fun to do a take on characters from my hero, Chuck Jones. The background is also a nod to background designer extraordinaire, Maurice Noble. This is based on his designs from "Hare-Way to The Stars" (1958) which I believe featured some of his best design work which ranks right up there with "What's Opera, Doc?" (1957) and "Duck Dodgers in the <span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22.399999618530273px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">24½th</span></span> Century" (1953)</div>

These are paste ups I made and each was individually painted by hand. I put them up at 5:00 this morning on Hollywood Blvd at the corner of St. Andrews Pl. They're roughly 36x40. I had made 3 pieces with the intention of hitting up La Brea and Fairfax as well. But due to circumstances beyond my control (the less said, the better) I had to paste up all 3 in the same location.<br />
Rick's exclamation of "Lock it up, Morty" is a call back to to an old Channel 101 short featuring the early prototypes of Rick and Morty named "Doc and Mharti" <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPuq2TbjlO8">The video can be seen here.</a><br />

This was a really fun one to draw. Prints will be available at the event and then on the <a href="http://trepanyhouse.org/">Trepany House website</a>. It suddenly dawned on me that with all of the cats I've been drawing over the past few years, will I become this century's Louis Wain? I kinda hope so. I wanna see what madness is like!</div>

Here's a speed painting of Marvin the Martian that I did this weekend for fun. The entire time spent on it from start to finish was 55 minutes. You can see the whole thing condensed down to 3 minutes here.<br />

It's been a lot of fun so far. <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.359999656677246px;">Swingtronic features live jazz bands, classic and electro swing DJ sets, so I've been painting cartoons in the 1930s style to keep in step with the overall theme and feel of the night. Here's a few from the past month. All of these are </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">32X40, </span><span aria-live="polite" class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" style="background-color: white; display: inline; line-height: 18px; outline: none; width: auto;" tabindex="0"><span class="hasCaption">house paint and marker</span></span><span class="fbPhotoTagList" id="fbPhotoSnowliftTagList" style="background-color: white; display: inline; line-height: 18px;"><span class="fcg"> on board.</span></span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Part of reason I enjoy doing live painting is the challenge for myself of allowing my work to become a bit looser and less disciplined. I want to try to let go of my inclination for perfection and over-thinking and just be a bit more spontaneous with my line work and allow mistakes to happen and just go with it. I think the paintings then take on a different energy compared to ones that I spend several hours or days on in my studio. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At this point, I'm still sketching out the designs for what I'll paint ahead of time, but I do hope to get to the point where I can become 100% spontaneous with the live work. </div>

I've always loved collecting animation art, so it's really fun to get to create my own. It is difficult however because I'm not using the correct paints. Cel Vinyl paint is really the only paint to use, but it's really expensive and since cels aren't actually used in animation production anymore, there's only one company that makes it anymore. Since I don't have any, I have to use heavy body acrylics. This piece was more challenging that <a href="http://theartofthomfoolery.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-animated-adventures-of-steve-zissou.html">my cel for the Wes Anderson tribute show</a> because it has much more detail. I discovered that latex house paint and mixing my acrylic with gesso seemed to help the flow of the paint somewhat. Here's some progress pics.</div>

The background was created digitally and just printed. I was originally going to hand paint the background, but I wasn't sure how to create the circles/bubbles without an airbursh (which I don't have). I was watching a lot of Sailor Moon episodes as research for the painting, and boy, do they sure like to throw those bubble in A LOT of backgrounds. Here's the background itself.</div>

If you're in the Los Angeles area, come out to the show tonight. It was curated by my pal <a href="http://nicocolaleo.tumblr.com/">Nico Colaleo</a> and he puts together some great shows with absolutely incredible artists. I saw some of the work last night and it blew me away!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I can't remember the last time I made an illustration purely for the fun of it. Not for a band or a promoter or a pitch, but just for the sake of creating a fun drawing. I need to do it more often.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I had a hard time settling on colors. Here are a few early options I was playing with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yhN1ePxohHY/U-PNQCTiKhI/AAAAAAAAB1E/frVwodmuaEE/s1600/color+optins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yhN1ePxohHY/U-PNQCTiKhI/AAAAAAAAB1E/frVwodmuaEE/s1600/color+optins.jpg" height="400" width="397" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(click for larger)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Also, sometimes I like to pose for my illustrations for reference.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Here's a T-shirt I just designed for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/skadonnamusic">Skadonna</a>, an all ska Madonna tribute band. For the figure, I once again borrowed from the iconic Betty Beat/Rude Girl logo. I figured I could combine that with an equally iconic version of Madonna. In my opinion, that would be her "Blond Ambition" days (circa 1990). The layout was borrowed from the seminal ska compilation "This Are Two Tone".</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N3sNIEYrwKk/U-ZIvJRA6II/AAAAAAAAB24/4a0b4rewcog/s1600/podhouse+90+dracula+option+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N3sNIEYrwKk/U-ZIvJRA6II/AAAAAAAAB24/4a0b4rewcog/s1600/podhouse+90+dracula+option+01.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(click for larger)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Podhouse 90 is a scripted anthology series of radio plays by Frank Conniff (Mystery Science Theater 3000, Cinematic Titanic, Invader ZIM) <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">This is for Episode 03 - "Dracula Has Risen In the Polls", another musical comedy extravaganza! As a lifelong Mystery Science Theater fan, it's always an honor when Frank asks me to illustrate for him. This one however was an especially big thrill as it stars one of Frank's fellow MST3K alumni, Trace Beaulieu who played Crow and Dr Forrester. </span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">cThis episode also features the spectacular comedy talents of </span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Eddie Pepitone, Julie Klausner, Dana Gould, Laraine Newman, Emily Maya M</span></span></span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">ills,Joe Keyes, Leite Preto, Rachel Lichtman, Olana DiGirolamo, J. Elvis Weinstein and Mark Thompson, plus vocals from Karen Lloyd and stellar guitar work from Larry Saltzman. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">For this illustration, I looked to the old pre-code EC comics for inspiration. Those things were just the best. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-htGXeBSZHB8/U-ZME5T5ZII/AAAAAAAAB3E/bB7z1FkjrLg/s1600/CrimeSuspenStories022.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-htGXeBSZHB8/U-ZME5T5ZII/AAAAAAAAB3E/bB7z1FkjrLg/s1600/CrimeSuspenStories022.jpeg" height="320" width="216" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I even spoofed the EC logo by changing it to Frank's initials.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U5zaAfyNowo/U-ZM8R7D6TI/AAAAAAAAB3M/zU0sULgRgr8/s1600/logo+spoofs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U5zaAfyNowo/U-ZM8R7D6TI/AAAAAAAAB3M/zU0sULgRgr8/s1600/logo+spoofs.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I made an alternate version that had a bit more of a worn "distressed look". I grabbed the folds and textures from an old worn copy of Mad Magazine. Frank decided not to go with this one since all teh texture doesn't read when the image is scaled down small in iTunes and I'd have to agree. Check out the image full size to see all of the texture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ohXG3rnK87A/U-ZNamUtrvI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/zjDhfKv2uNc/s1600/podhouse+90+dracula+option+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ohXG3rnK87A/U-ZNamUtrvI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/zjDhfKv2uNc/s1600/podhouse+90+dracula+option+02.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
(click for larger)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>

As with all of my illustrations, I always notice what I did wrong or what I could have improved on after the fact. I'm not too happy with Dracula's proportions. I think his head is a bit too big here. Oh well, I'll just try to keep that in mind next time.</div>

I met Chris back Adult Swim days at Williams Street in Atlanta and I had been a fan of his work before that, so it was nice to get to do some design work for him. Here are a few of the earlier versions. Chris wanted me to steer it in more of a 1930s Max Fleischer direction.</div>

This is a piece I made for "Cinch Me", a corset fetish group art show at <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/antebellum-gallery-hollywood">Antebellum</a> curated by my friend <a href="http://www.exquisiterestraint.com/">Simone Williams</a>. I want to thank Simone for pushing me to do something new with my work. I was worried I wouldn't have time to create a piece since I tend to over-think all of my work and fixate on minute details to the point where I take forever to get a piece done. This is one of the reasons I'm not as productive as I'd like, because each piece seem to take too long or I'll end up getting frustrated and give up before I even begin. Simone saw some of my more loose, rough concepts for other pieces and convinced me that my work even in that state still looks good and that I should just go for it. I think she was right. Instead of spending weeks on a large scale canvas painting with a paint brush smaller than my pinky nail, I just went for it with markers and paint on a large sheet of paper and I was able to knock it out in one afternoon. I should really paint like this more often. The color choices were inspired by my friend <a href="http://www.xanthiapink.com/">Xanthia</a>.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">Yesterday it was announced that actor Bob Hoskins had passed away, and on my Facebook account I had made the following comment "</span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I wonder how long it will be til shitty fan art of Roger Rabbit or Mario looking sad floods my news feed". Some people thought this meant I didn't like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or that I didn't care about Bob Hoskins. Now neither of those are true. Obviously Roger Rabbit was a tremendously influential movie for me and to this day remains one of my favorite films of all time. My problem was that </span></span>this will be yet another situation where all of the dumb-dumbs of my generation will remember an actor for only one single role despite a lifetime of work and achievement. Also regardless of the fact that they never bothered to see his any of his other work, all day long they're gonna act like their freakin' dad died. The same thing happened last month with Harold Ramis ("Who? Oh, you mean Egon!") The man made a tremendous contribution to modern comedy cinema, and all anyone could talk about was Ghostbusters. There was no mention of SCTV, Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation or Animal House! It was nothing but illustrations of Egon as a ghost with the rest of the Ghostbusters looking sad. Just wait til Christopher Lloyd dies and we're inundated with a flood of crappy drawings of Marty McFly in the passenger seat of the DeLorean looking sad at an empty driver seat. I guarantee it will happen and there will be no drawings of Danny DeVito and the rest of the cast of "Taxi" looking sad at a cab, or Jack Nicholson and the rest of the cast of "One Flew Over The CooCoo's Nest" looking sad at an empty straight jacket or something equally as dumb. </span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But beyond the fact that such fan art focus exclusively on just one single aspect of an artist's lifetime of achievements, I want to point out how phenomenally boring, predicable, formulaic, and depressing these "tributes" are. It's not a new thing. Warner Brothers did a series of these when Mel Blanc and Chuck Jones (my hero) died</span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n1HZlakhyic/U2K00zVjPUI/AAAAAAAABso/BDW500npJzg/s1600/blanc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n1HZlakhyic/U2K00zVjPUI/AAAAAAAABso/BDW500npJzg/s1600/blanc.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IVL92Z0WuOc/U2K00-NxD5I/AAAAAAAABsk/DlFNTQOgQik/s1600/chuck.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IVL92Z0WuOc/U2K00-NxD5I/AAAAAAAABsk/DlFNTQOgQik/s1600/chuck.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Look at how boring and depressing these are! Now to me, this isn't a tribute. This is a commemoration of death and doesn't do any kind of justice to the accomplishments they achieved in their lifetime or the joy they brought to their audiences. Also, these were for sale as high end (and expensive) cels. Would you really want to hang this on your wall? Why would you want a reminder that an artist whose work you've admired and has brought you so much happiness in your lifetime is now dead. Why not something that actually celebrates their life and their work. Take a look at these two tributes that were created when Friz Freleng died. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pO5lC69Js3k/U2K005wuuyI/AAAAAAAABs8/XF-GxjP49Q8/s1600/friz+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pO5lC69Js3k/U2K005wuuyI/AAAAAAAABs8/XF-GxjP49Q8/s1600/friz+01.jpg" height="320" width="289" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y775q-klTMc/U2K01Wl31BI/AAAAAAAABss/gIRCYDUXYBU/s1600/friz+02.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y775q-klTMc/U2K01Wl31BI/AAAAAAAABss/gIRCYDUXYBU/s1600/friz+02.gif" height="320" width="290" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">To me, the second one seems to do a much better job at celebrating the artist's life rather than going down a tired, predictable route that says "he's dead and we're sad" </span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being sad, but if you're an an artist, and another artist has really truly influenced you, and you want a way to express that creatively when they pass, then actually show that by doing something genuinely creative and not a tired old cliche. Create something that celebrates their life and how it affected yours. Make something that that artist could look at and be proud to have had a hand in helping shape the person behind it.</span></div>
</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Here we have "an original production cel and matching layout drawing from 'The Animated Adventures of Steve Zissou and Friends' from 1983". This is my piece for tonight's group tribute show to Wes Anderson at Meltdown Comics curated by Nico Colaleo.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O2xSh9jCv8U/U-ZzesaaALI/AAAAAAAAB48/QZ-7ZFBm7rI/s1600/1654347_10151883782859080_1326872416_n.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O2xSh9jCv8U/U-ZzesaaALI/AAAAAAAAB48/QZ-7ZFBm7rI/s1600/1654347_10151883782859080_1326872416_n.jpeg" height="320" width="207" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've always loved animation production art, so I thought this show would be a great chance to make my own cel. The thinking behind this one was that in "The Life Aquatic" Steve Zissou was a huge celebrity in the public eye in the 1970s, so it would be only logical to assume that he would have had his own animated series in the early 80s. When designing this I really wanted to match the look of early 80s Saturday morning cartoons. I realize that for this to make chronological sense I would have had to design it as a younger Bill Muray, but I did't think that would sell. People would want to see him as he appeared throughout the movie. I of course had to add an obnoxious anthropomorphic talking animal sidekick since that was pretty much a requirement for the cartoons of the time. It only stands to reason that if Steve Zissou were real and he were to star in an Saturday morning cartoon, that some dopey network execs would have said "How about a talking dolphin? We'll call him Squeaks. The kids'll love him. He'll open up a whole new area of merchandise possibilities.". I didn't want to just draw the characters in a boring, static pose. To really make this look like an actual production cel, I would have to create an image that looks like it was a still from the middle of the action of a scene, and I wanted the scene to reflect what looks like could have been a story typical of the cartoons of that time and genre. So here Steve is informing the crew that Squeaks has just found the enchanted jewel which will lead them to the mystic cave of the ancients, or something like that. I'll leave it up to the view to write their own story.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To create the cel, I drew the image in Photoshop and had each image printed onto its own acetate transparency sheet. Then, just as with traditional animation cels, I painted the backs of each. I then taped them onto a hand drawn layout sketch.</div>

This first one was based on an idea from Aaron (Reel Big Fish's frontman)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d15n73zz_t4/U-MzjIADbSI/AAAAAAAAByk/Qit0zN3-3bI/s1600/dont+stop+skankin+poster+for+web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d15n73zz_t4/U-MzjIADbSI/AAAAAAAAByk/Qit0zN3-3bI/s1600/dont+stop+skankin+poster+for+web.jpg" height="640" width="414" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(click for larger)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Aaron thought it'd be funny to show a bunch of old folks skankin' to show that they indeed did not stop skankin'. So I decided to base it on the classic ska icons, Walt Jabsco and Betty Beat.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jCWB1fqOGKE/U-M0trHRDEI/AAAAAAAABys/aTrCvjhe1oY/s1600/12787.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jCWB1fqOGKE/U-M0trHRDEI/AAAAAAAABys/aTrCvjhe1oY/s1600/12787.jpeg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This second poster was for select tour dates with Goldfinger.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qhSfzo2Mgr0/U-M07fRHOhI/AAAAAAAABy0/K2A8eMO48tY/s1600/dont+stop+skankin+poster+w+goldfinger+for+web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qhSfzo2Mgr0/U-M07fRHOhI/AAAAAAAABy0/K2A8eMO48tY/s1600/dont+stop+skankin+poster+w+goldfinger+for+web.jpg" height="640" width="414" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(click for larger)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this one I thought it would be fun to combine my RBF Candy Coated Fury characters with Goldfinger's space dominatrix character. This was especially exciting for me because I've been a fan of Goldfinger since their self-titled album was released in '96 and I fell in love with the album artwork, which is where that character first appeared. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HK6wXo-CHI4/U-M2gD5JOWI/AAAAAAAABzQ/5VbZSm7yNAA/s1600/maxresdefault.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HK6wXo-CHI4/U-M2gD5JOWI/AAAAAAAABzQ/5VbZSm7yNAA/s1600/maxresdefault.jpeg" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQWNkJ3ceLs/U-M2fKlj5-I/AAAAAAAABzA/7B5kTQd923M/s1600/98511084.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQWNkJ3ceLs/U-M2fKlj5-I/AAAAAAAABzA/7B5kTQd923M/s1600/98511084.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gXTAs2L9nAA/U-M2fXq1I0I/AAAAAAAABzE/Qn4kDe-dKF0/s1600/acz.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gXTAs2L9nAA/U-M2fXq1I0I/AAAAAAAABzE/Qn4kDe-dKF0/s1600/acz.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also added in the classic Reel Big Fish mascot/logo into the Dom's fishbowl which was designed by the insanely talented and legendary <a href="http://parkerjacobs.blogspot.com/">Parker Jacobs</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now I was told by Reel Big Fish's management that for whatever reason Goldfinger's management said that Space Dom couldn't look exactly like the original, so if I wanted to draw her, I'd have to change her. Well, in an attempt to make her look different and make her look like she matched the style of the Candy Coated Fury characters, I rounded her head and made the eyes much bigger. Well, someone pointed out that she now looks like Sedusa from The Powerpuff Girls. Unfortunately, while this certainly was not intentional, I have to agree. It's no secret that I'm a big fan of the art direction of Powerpuff Girls and was heavily influenced by it, but I certainly don't ever want to directly swipe from any of my influences unless it's a direct, intentional, and credited parody. I really, really wish I could have gone back and changed it, but unfortunately, it's too late.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now I have to say, it was really rad to see my artwork up in lights in Times Square in NYC at the Best Buy Theater!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AJ-CgvuDRwY/Ur0O08XRFgI/AAAAAAAABmw/u8szY6fMvZk/s1600/roger+rabbit+final+web+rez.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AJ-CgvuDRwY/Ur0O08XRFgI/AAAAAAAABmw/u8szY6fMvZk/s320/roger+rabbit+final+web+rez.jpg" height="335" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(click for larger)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't even begin to describe what an impact this movie had on my life. I was 8 years old when it came out, and that is the earliest specific date I can recall. It's like when you're a child, you don't have a real solid sense of time yet. All events over the span of years get lumped into this one big nebulous chunk of time, with no real dates or years attached to any specific moment to delineate one from the other. It all becomes "back when I was a kid". But "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was such a momentous event in my life, I've always been able to remember it as the summer of '88. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This movie was like a depiction of my dreams made manifest on celluloid. My parents tell me that when I was a toddler watching Looney Tunes, I had tried to crawl into the TV because I wanted to live with the cartoons. I wanted a world where cartoons were real. Roger Rabbit was the first time I actually got to see that idea of cartoons as being real and part of our world. Now I know that Who Framed Roger Rabbit is certainly not the first time cartoons have been integrated with live action film. But, back in '88, I had not yet seen the Porky/Daffy short "You Ought To Be In Pictures" or any of Disney's "Alice" comedies, or even Disney's "Mary Poppins" (I never really cared for many of the Disney live action films when I was a kid, and sadly, I still don't)</div>
I still remember sitting in the theater when the big "Maroon Cartoon" title cards popped up and "Somethin's Cookin'" began and while watching it with wide eyes wondering how they were going to make the jump from this 100% animated cartoon into the real world. I was thinking "is the jump into the real world what changes Baby Herman into a cigar smoking tough guy, like he is in the commercials on TV? Are they gonna have to try to get back? Is that plot?" 5 minutes later when the camera pulls back to reveal its all a set, and they were just filming a cartoon on a soundstage in Hollywood the same way they would make any other movie, it completely blew my mind. That was the world I wanted to live in.<br />
After that, I drew Roger Rabbit obsessively for the next 3 or 4 years on any paper I could get my hands on. I'll have to post some of those drawings later. Roger Rabbit was definitely a benchmark in my life and I really hope he makes a return to the screen someday, and I really hope that I may be lucky enough to get to work with him professionally one day.<br />

Here's the final cover art for the debut EP from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hoorayforourside">Hooray For Our Side</a>. The band's vocalist, Evan, and I are both huge Back To The Future fans, so we thought to create the cover, it would be fun create the album art, from concept to final product, while watching the entire Back To The Future trilogy over pizza and beer. It ended up taking quite a bit longer than that. We met with various other members and friends of the band over the course of 4 nights and while working on this, we watched the entire BTTF trilogy, Brad Neely's Wizard People Dear Reader, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and several episodes from season 3 of The Simpsons. We also had about 6 pizzas, 40 chicken wings, 2 burritos, 1 bottle of cake flavored vodka, 2 cases of soda, and about 45 beers.</div>
